Den standard IEEE klubbade häromdagen, kallad 802.16a, kan få stor betydelse för såväl 3G-näten som de snabbt framväxande lokala radionäten (wlan). Exakt hur den kommer att påverka utvecklingen är dock för tidigt att säga.

• ELEKTRONIKTIDNINGEN

" The 802.11g specification uses a relatively new method of encoding bits onto radio waves in such a way as to squeeze up to 54 Mbps of raw data across a single channel. (For the technical among you, this method is called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and is similar to the way DSL puts bits onto copper wire.)

As is the case with most theoretical network throughputs, the net throughput of real data--the actual contents of files or transactions--provides somewhere between 20 and 30 Mbps. In contrast, 802.11b's 11 Mbps raw throughput generally translated to 4 to 6 Mbps at best, and it wasn't uncommon to drop below that as distance from the base station increased."

• 802.11g's "Extreme" Emergence

If you follow the WiFi world at all, you probably know all this, but that doesn't mean the makers of WiFi equipment are making it easy for consumers to find out that it's probably not reasonable to buy any 802.11g equipment right now. The most important point is that the supposed "boost" in speed is useless for almost everyone. I've had this discussion with people who said they were waiting to buy a WiFi setup until "g" was out, because of the speed. Of course, these people had cable modems set up with a cap well below the speed that the "slower" 802.11b would let them use. Going to 802.11g does no good whatsoever - except when you're transferring insanely large files between computers on your own network. Also worth noting, is that the 802.11g standard hasn't been officially set yet. So, if things change, those who buy equipment now may find themselves out of luck, when trying to connect to official 802.11g equipment. Of course, that won't stop companies like Linksys from promoting their "g" solutions as much as they can right now.

802.11a
Utrustningar som arbetar i enlighet med 802.11a anses likvärdiga med Hiperlan 1 utrustningar som är undantagen från tillståndsplikt i Sverige i bandet 5150 - 5250 MHz. Reglerna är att användning får ske endast inomhus med maximal effekt 200 mW eirp. Däremot får 802.11a inte användas i bandet 5250 - 5350 MHz eftersom denna typ av utrustningar ej lever upp till kraven i ERC-beslut (99)23 främst i avseende på dynamisk frekvensval, DFS, effektbegränsning, TPC, samt spridning av användning inom ett tillräckligt stort band. Skulle PTS undanta 802.11a-utrustningar i 5250 - 5350 MHz innebär det att risken är stor att tex olika radarutrustningar kommer att bli störda. Att utrustningen är undantagen från tillståndsplikt innebär dessutom att det är mycket svårt att åtgärda störproblem eftersom det ej kommer att vara känt vem som stör eller var den störande utrustningen befinner sig.

"This document defines the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), an authentication protocol which supports multiple authentication mechanisms. EAP typically runs directly over the link layer without requiring IP and therefore includes its own support for in-order delivery and retransmission. Fragmentation is not supported within EAP itself; however, individual EAP methods may support this. While EAP was originally developed for use with PPP, it is also now in use with IEEE 802. This document obsoletes RFC 2284."
